On Wednesday, the authorities of Mecca called for local schools to remain shut after heavy rain hit various parts of Saudi Arabia.
Residents and travelers in Mecca shared videos on social media that showed pilgrims taking shelter from a heavy thunderstorm overnight.
The Saudi Press Agency reported that on Tuesday evening, Heavy rain struck, followed by thunderstorms, in different parts of the neighborhoods of Makkah Al Mukarramah.
On Wednesday, Schools would be shut due to the hazardous weather, the Education officials said.
We foresaw a “continuance of moderate to heavy thunderstorms that will guide to torrential rains, followed by heavy showers of hail and active winds that prompt dust and sand, restricting flat visibility in parts of the regions of Jazan, Asir, Al Baha, Makkah, and Madinah, the National Centre of Meteorology said.
Several videos posted on social media showed pilgrims struggling to circle the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque amid powerful winds, with some having to avoid separation barriers that were blown around.
However, one trending video showed that lightning strikes on the well-known clock tower that supervises the Kaaba.
While the other videos shared on social media showed that heavy flooding caused by rain in Jeddah, south of Makkah.
