President Putin Defends Russia’s Ukraine War at BRICS Summit, Praises Alliance

In a speech delivered at a BRICS summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin staunchly defended Russia’s military involvement in the conflict with Ukraine. He also highlighted the alliance’s significance as a counterbalance to the perceived global dominance of the United States.

Addressing the summit’s leaders via a virtual platform, Putin reiterated Russia’s narrative that its actions in Ukraine were a reaction to hostile activities from both Kyiv and Washington. He reiterated that Russia’s intervention was a response to what it saw as Western aggression, a perspective that has been widely criticized and condemned by Ukraine and Western nations as an “imperialist territorial grab.”

Putin emphasized that the intent behind Russia’s actions in Ukraine was to end the conflict that he argued had been instigated by Western powers and their allies. He specifically referred to the ongoing clashes in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed forces have been engaged in conflict with the Ukrainian military since 2014.

The Russian President pointed out that the pursuit of global hegemony by certain countries had contributed to the deep-seated crisis in Ukraine. He suggested that the desire for dominance and control was a significant factor that had led to the conflict.

While Russia has expressed a willingness to participate in peace negotiations to resolve the ongoing conflict, it has also asserted that these negotiations must consider the “new realities” shaped by Russia’s control over a significant portion of Ukrainian territory. On the other hand, Ukraine’s stance remains focused on the full withdrawal of Russian forces from its land and the restoration of its sovereignty.

The summit also witnessed a response from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who, in a separate context earlier, had presented an African peace plan to both President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Ramaphosa reaffirmed the unity of BRICS countries in their support for efforts to end the conflict and find a peaceful resolution.

As tensions continue to escalate and the diplomatic dynamics evolve, the BRICS alliance remains a key player in shaping the discourse surrounding the conflict in Ukraine and the geopolitical balance on the global stage.
