King Charles III and his wife Queen Camilla hosted their first garden party at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, ahead of their official coronation on May 6. The royal couple welcomed thousands of guests to the palace, continuing a tradition that dates back to the 1860s.
The annual garden parties are a way for the monarch to recognize public service and are attended by a range of guests including members of the public and representatives from various organizations. In attendance at Wednesday’s gathering were Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duke, and Duchess of Edinburgh, as well as the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
Despite the presence of several other members of the royal family, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their children did not attend the event. The family-friendly affair featured live music, tea and cakes, and the opportunity to stroll through the palace gardens.
One notable guest in attendance was singer Lionel Richie, who is set to perform at the Coronation Concert on Sunday. The star-studded event will also feature performances by Katy Perry, Andrea Bocelli, Take That, Sir Bryn Terfel, Freya Ridings, and Alexis Ffrench.
The 74-year-old monarch looked dapper in a top hat for the occasion, while Queen Camilla looked elegant in a blue and white dress, complete with a matching hat. The royal family shared images from the garden party on their official Twitter account, showcasing the festive atmosphere and colorful outfits worn by the guests.
As the world watches and waits for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, this first garden party of their reign provided a glimpse into the couple’s warm and welcoming approach to royal duties.
