On Wednesday, during his first foreign visit as king, Charles III affirmed that Britain and Germany stand united with Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s unprovoked invasion. Speaking at a state banquet hosted by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the monarch highlighted both countries’ commitment to “protecting and advancing shared democratic values.”
“This is epitomised so clearly today as we stand together with Ukraine in defence of freedom and sovereignty in the face of unprovoked aggression,” Charles III said.
The British sovereign, aged 74, is on a three-day visit to Germany, which has been dubbed as “an important European gesture” to maintain strong ties after Brexit.
The king praised the “enduring value” of the UK’s relationship with Germany and pledged to “do all I can to strengthen the connections between us.” Meanwhile, President Steinmeier expressed his sadness regarding Brexit, calling it a “sad day” six years ago when Britain began its exit from the European Union.
However, Steinmeier noted that despite the changed conditions, the two countries remain committed to their friendship. “We are now looking ahead under changed conditions — but still together,” he said, adding that “our friendship is important, and it is strong.”
The joint actions of Britain and Germany in supporting Ukraine in defending its freedom against Russia’s aggression demonstrate “how strong our connection is,” Steinmeier said.
The king’s visit to Germany is seen as a significant step in strengthening ties between the UK and EU member states after Brexit. Charles III is expected to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during his visit and attend several cultural events.
The ongoing crisis in Ukraine has been a major concern for the international community, with Russia accused of supporting separatist rebels in the eastern part of the country. The UK and Germany have been vocal in their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and their joint efforts to help Ukraine demonstrate their commitment to these values.
