The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will reportedly be allowed to keep their royal titles, despite calls for them to be stripped by some members of the public. According to former royal butler Grant Harrold, King Charles III will not remove the titles bestowed upon Harry and Meghan by Queen Elizabeth II.
“I know a lot of people think that King Charles should strip Harry of his royal title,” Harrold said in an interview with Slingo. “Kings and Queens would historically strip royal titles for treason to the crown. At the moment, I think there is not a real justified reason for him to strip Harry’s Duke of Sussex title.”
Harrold went on to suggest that one reason why Charles may not remove the titles is that they were given to Harry as a gift by his grandmother. “For Charles to take the title off Harry, he’s taking a gift from his mother away from her grandchild,” he said. “I really don’t think he will.”
The former butler also predicted that Charles would face criticism no matter what decision he made regarding Harry’s title. “I think Charles is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn’t when it comes to Harry,” he said.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal titles have been a topic of controversy since they announced their decision to step back from their roles as senior members of the royal family in January 2020. Some have called for them to lose their titles due to their perceived lack of commitment to the monarchy, while others have argued that the titles were given to them by the queen and should therefore be respected.
Prince Harry recently attended his father’s coronation ceremony on his own, while Meghan Markle stayed in California with their two children, Archie and Lilibet. It remains to be seen whether the couple will return to the UK for any future royal events.
