Additionally, he allegedly disclosed information about an upcoming exercise involving US Marines. As a result, Wei is now facing charges under the seldom-used Espionage Act, which considers the gathering or delivery of information to aid a foreign government as a criminal offense.
Meanwhile, Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao faces charges of conspiracy and bribery. Authorities have accused Zhao of accepting nearly $15,000 in exchange for supplying sensitive US military photos and videos to a Chinese intelligence officer. Zhao’s alleged actions also extended to sending detailed plans of US military exercises in the Indo-Pacific region and confidential information about a radar system on a US military base in Okinawa, Japan. Moreover, he is accused of providing security details for US naval facilities in Ventura County and San Clemente Island, both located near Los Angeles.
