The woman who accused rapper Jay-Z of sexual assault is now seeking to have his defamation lawsuit dismissed. The legal drama, which began in late 2024, continues to unfold as both parties stand firm on their claims.
According to People magazine, the accuser—identified in court documents as Jane Doe—filed a motion on April 22, 2025, requesting the court to throw out Jay-Z’s lawsuit. The hip-hop mogul, whose real name is Shawn Carter, is suing Doe and her legal team for defamation, malicious prosecution, abuse of process, and civil conspiracy.
Timeline of the Case
In December 2024, Doe filed a lawsuit claiming that Jay-Z and fellow music executive Sean “Diddy” Combs sexually assaulted her at an MTV VMAs afterparty in 2000 when she was only 13 years old. However, the lawsuit was voluntarily withdrawn in February 2025.
In response, Jay-Z launched a countersuit in March, describing the original claims as “false” and “malicious.” His legal filing accused Doe and her attorneys of attempting to extort him while damaging his personal and professional reputation.
Jay-Z’s Claims and Legal Stand
Jay-Z’s legal team, led by attorney Alex Spiro, claims that the accusations caused significant harm. According to the lawsuit, Roc Nation, Jay-Z’s entertainment company, suffered financial losses exceeding $20 million due to the public fallout. The rapper also cited emotional distress and reputational damage as a result of the allegations.

Spiro told Good Morning America, “This person cannot be allowed to sort of hide from the reality that this was a false accusation.”
Jane Doe’s Motion to Dismiss
In her recent court filing, Doe argues that Jay-Z’s defamation case lacks merit. Her motion states that the lawsuit “fails to state a claim upon which relief can be granted” and contends that the accusations related to conspiracy and abuse of process fall short of legal standards.
Furthermore, Doe’s legal team asserts that her previous statements are protected under California’s “absolute privilege” rule, which shields certain communications in legal proceedings from defamation claims.
Attorney Tony Buzbee, representing Doe, responded to Spiro’s remarks by calling them “a blatant lie.”
Ongoing Legal Battle
This high-profile legal confrontation has captured significant media attention, given the stature of the celebrities involved. With both sides presenting strong legal arguments, it remains to be seen how the court will rule on the motion to dismiss.
