Brian Cox, best known for his role in Succession, has shared an unconventional secret to his long-lasting marriage with Nicole Ansari-Cox.
In a recent interview with The Times, Cox revealed that living separately from his wife has been a key factor in maintaining a healthy and creative relationship.
Separate Homes for a Stronger Bond
“By keeping things separate, we are responsible for our own mess,” Cox said. “Her space is very important for her, and my space is very important for me. I think if we’re thrown together, we feel locked together, and that’s not a good creative relationship.”
He continued, “You should be free,” emphasizing that their approach allows each partner to maintain individuality while nurturing the marriage.

The couple, married since 2002, maintains separate homes in London that are just minutes apart, as well as individual spaces in their US residences. Cox acknowledged his wife’s sacrifices, saying, “Nicole gave up a lot for me. It was tricky for her, but she gave up a lot, and I feel that she needs to be honoured.”
Couples Therapy and Open Communication
Cox also credited couples therapy as an essential part of sustaining their bond over the years. The actor emphasized that maintaining personal space, along with professional support, has strengthened both their marriage and individual creativity.
Approaching a Milestone
Brian and Nicole share two sons and are approaching their 25th wedding anniversary. Their unique approach to marriage demonstrates that flexibility, respect for individual space, and open communication can help long-term relationships thrive, even under the spotlight of fame.
