Fresh off his Oscar win for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy is set to make waves once again—this time at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
The acclaimed Irish actor will return to the spotlight with his upcoming film Steve, which has been selected to open TIFF’s Platform program, a prestigious section that highlights bold directorial visions. The announcement was made on Monday by festival organizers.

Steve, adapted by Max Porter from his novella Shy, casts Murphy as a headteacher navigating a critical day at a last-chance reform school for troubled youth. The character is haunted by his own past while attempting to guide students who have been neglected by society.
Among them is Shy, a vulnerable teen played by Jay Lycurgo, who finds himself torn between lingering trauma and the hope of a better future. The emotional narrative promises a powerful examination of healing, resilience, and connection.
The film is directed by Tim Mielants, who previously collaborated with Murphy on Peaky Blinders (Season 3) and Small Things Like These. Their creative synergy returns in this new project, further elevating anticipation among fans and critics alike.
The supporting cast includes Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo (also known as Little Simz), and Emily Watson, adding depth and diversity to the emotionally charged drama.
Steve is one of ten films featured in the Platform section at this year’s festival, alongside notable entries such as Farnoosh Samadi’s Between Dreams and Hope and Yoon Ga-eun’s The World of Love. The complete film lineup will be unveiled through a series of announcements between July 23 and August 8.
The 50th Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled to run from September 4 to 14, 2025, and promises a dynamic celebration of international cinema. Cillian Murphy’s presence is expected to bring heightened global attention to the event.
