The creator of Euphoria, Sam Levinson, has addressed growing discussion around the show’s upcoming season 3 storyline, which has sparked debate among viewers.
The conversation centers around the evolving character arc of Sydney Sweeney’s character Cassie, which has drawn mixed reactions due to its increasingly chaotic and controversial direction.
Levinson Defends Creative Direction
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Levinson explained the creative intention behind one of the show’s more unusual scenes, emphasizing that humor and absurdity play a key role in its storytelling style.
He described how certain visual elements—such as Cassie’s exaggerated fantasy-like setting—were designed to reflect her emotional state while also stepping outside of her internal perspective to avoid being fully trapped in illusion.
According to Levinson, the goal was to create layers within the scene, allowing the audience to shift between fantasy and reality in a way that feels intentionally exaggerated and self-aware.
Breaking Reality for Effect
Levinson also noted that one of the key creative choices was to prevent the audience from staying too deeply inside the character’s imagination.

Instead, the storytelling approach intentionally “breaks” the illusion to highlight absurdity and emotional instability, reinforcing the show’s signature style of blending realism with stylized drama.
Cinematography Choices Explained
The show’s visual approach was also discussed by director of photography Marcell Rév, who explained the decision behind the setting design.
He revealed that the team intentionally avoided modern or overly polished aesthetics, instead opting for a mid-century inspired home that feels slightly dated and unconventional.
This choice, he explained, added a layer of texture and unpredictability to the scene, giving the production more creative flexibility.
A Divisive but Intentional Vision
While the storyline has sparked debate among viewers, the creative team maintains that the choices are intentional and designed to reflect emotional chaos and stylized storytelling.
As anticipation builds for Season 3, discussions around tone, character direction, and visual style continue to keep the series at the center of online conversation.
