Thomas Markle has returned to the United States for medical treatment, days before his grandson Prince Archie turns seven, according to media reports.
The move follows a serious health episode earlier this year. Thomas, who had been living in the Philippines, reportedly underwent a leg amputation after a blood clot in his thigh cut off circulation to his foot.
Return for ongoing treatment
His daughter Samantha Markle said the decision to return to the US was made to ensure access to continued medical care and rehabilitation.

She stated that he would be able to receive improved prosthetic support and be closer to friends and family during recovery. She also described the experience as challenging but said it had brought a renewed perspective.
Long-standing family estrangement
Thomas Markle has been estranged from Meghan Markle for several years. Their relationship broke down in the lead-up to her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry, after he did not attend the ceremony.

Since then, he has publicly spoken about not having met his grandchildren, including Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Timing draws attention
His return to the United States comes shortly before Archie’s birthday, drawing attention to the ongoing distance within the family.
There has been no public comment from Meghan Markle or Prince Harry regarding his return or current condition.
