Emmanuel Macron has sharply criticized Donald Trump after the former U.S. leader mocked him over a viral video in which Macron’s wife appeared to push him during a public event in Vietnam last May.
Speaking on Thursday, Macron described Trump’s comments as “neither elegant nor up to standard,” highlighting his growing frustration amid ongoing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and NATO allies.
Trump’s Mockery Sparks Outrage in France
Trump referenced the incident during an Easter lunch at the White House, joking that Macron was “slapped by his wife” and imitating him with a mock French accent. The remarks were widely condemned by French politicians.
Yael Braun-Pivet said Trump’s mockery was inappropriate given the seriousness of international issues, while Manuel Bompard labeled the comments “absolutely unacceptable.”
Tensions Amid NATO and Global Hotspots
The incident comes at a time when NATO members face pressure from Washington to uphold responsibilities in strategic global locations. Macron reaffirmed France’s stance against unilateral military actions, emphasizing pragmatic approaches to avoid escalating risks in sensitive regions.
The mockery reportedly extended beyond France, also touching on NATO allies such as Germany and the U.K., further straining diplomatic relations between Washington and its European partners.
Macron reiterated France’s commitment to pursuing its own independent approach on global issues despite U.S. pressure, signaling a firm stance on sovereignty and multilateral diplomacy.
